Brighter Hamilton Entrances

Single Entry Doors With Sidelights

Sidelights can brighten a foyer and widen the entrance composition, but glass, framing, privacy and threshold details need one coordinated plan.

Design the glass for both the foyer and the front walk

A sidelight changes how an entrance looks from the street and how visible the foyer becomes after dark. Decide early whether the priority is clear outward views, patterned privacy, diffused daylight or a closer visual match to nearby windows.

The complete unit must fit the rough opening and bear correctly at the sill and head. Replacing only the central door while retaining unrelated sidelights can create alignment, finish and warranty complications.

Windows Hamilton provides appointment-based project service throughout Hamilton and surrounding areas. We do not operate a showroom or sell loose door parts.

Control Light, Privacy and Proportion

A sidelight is part window and part entrance system

Review its glazing and frame requirements alongside door operation.

Privacy after sunset

Interior lighting can turn clear sidelights into a direct view of the foyer; test the desired opacity from both sides.

Balanced proportions

One or two sidelights change the active-door position, centreline and relation to steps, ceiling and interior circulation.

Glass near the lock

Select appropriate safety glazing and consider visibility and security without relying on decorative glass as a lock upgrade.

Coordinate the Entrance Composition

Use the glass pattern to support—not overwhelm—the door

The strongest design usually repeats a limited set of lines, colours and finishes.

One sidelight

Bring daylight to one side while preserving wall space or accommodating an off-centre opening.

Single entry door with two balanced sidelights

Two sidelights

Create a symmetrical entrance and broader foyer light while accounting for the wider sill and exterior trim.

Privacy glass

Compare patterned, frosted and internal-treatment options at day and night before approving the glass.

Keep or Replace Existing Sidelights

A partial replacement needs compatible structure and sightlines

Complete unit

Renew door, sidelights, sill and frame together

A full system provides clearer alignment, weather sealing and finish responsibility across the opening.

  • One coordinated frame
  • Consistent glass and finishes
  • Single installation scope
Partial scope

Retain components only after detailed assessment

Reusing existing sidelights may be possible in limited situations, but connections, dimensions and remaining condition must be verified.

  • Retained framing is stable
  • New interfaces can be flashed
  • Visual differences are acceptable

The Wider Sill Needs Support

Prepare the base and exterior perimeter across the whole opening

A wider entrance places more of the system over the sill and requires continuous support, controlled drainage and careful transitions to masonry, siding or cladding.

Confirm interior casing, flooring patches, alarm contacts and exterior lighting before work begins. These small adjacent items often determine whether the finished entrance looks complete.
