Fixed Residential Windows

Picture Windows Built Around the View

A fixed sash keeps the glass area simple and uninterrupted. The tradeoff is equally clear: a picture window brings in light but does not open for ventilation.

Fixed by Design

No crank, track or moving sash

A picture window is a non-operating window intended to provide daylight and a broad view. With no opening hardware, the visual emphasis stays on the glass and the scene beyond it.

That simplicity can work well in living areas, stairwells and larger window groupings where ventilation is handled by another opening. It can also be useful in a location where an open sash would be impractical.

Windows Hamilton starts with the room, the direction the wall faces and the view you want to frame. A larger pane is not automatically better if glare, privacy, furnishings or exterior proportions are ignored.

A Clear Tradeoff

More uninterrupted glass, no direct airflow

Picture windows are easy to understand when the benefit and limitation are considered together.

What you gain

A simpler field of view

Without an operable sash, screen or opening hardware, the window can place more visual emphasis on the glass.

  • Broad sightlines
  • No opening projection
  • Useful centrepiece for combinations
What you give up

Ventilation at that opening

A picture window cannot be opened. Fresh-air requirements must be met through another window, door or ventilation strategy.

  • No screen needed
  • No emergency opening
  • Exterior cleaning access still required
Large Glass Needs a Complete Plan

Questions to settle before ordering

How large should the pane be?

The opening, framing, glass specification, handling and manufacturer limits all influence a practical size.

What will the sun do in this room?

Orientation, nearby shade and interior finishes affect glare and heat gain. Discuss the full glass specification rather than relying on the style name.

How will the exterior be cleaned?

A fixed window may be easy to maintain mechanically, but the outside surface still needs safe access.

Does the whole frame need replacement?

Fogging between panes or damaged glass may call for a sealed-unit or glass assessment. The frame condition determines whether broader replacement should be considered.
