A New Patio Door Where There Was Once a Wall
This was more than a patio door replacement. A completely new opening was created through the brick and block wall, then paired with a practical group of new basement windows around the home.
The Door Began as a Carefully Supported Opening.
The rear wall originally had no door in this location. Creating one required a full cut through the brick and block, followed by new support above the opening and a properly formed sill below. The installation-stage photographs record the wall while it was open to the kitchen.
A steel lintel was worked into the brick coursing, while the interior received a framed header supported at the sides. Once the opening was ready, the white sliding patio door could be installed and the interior opening finished around it.
The same project addressed four basement windows with different needs. One opening was raised for a hopper-style unit, another received a full cut with new support, and the remaining picture and single-slider windows fit the existing openings.
The finished rear elevation looks straightforward, which is exactly the point. The structural work recedes into the wall, leaving a clean new route between the kitchen and yard rather than an opening that looks added as an afterthought.
