Look at the room from inside and outside
From inside, a projecting window can widen the view and create a deeper sill or seating area. The amount of usable space depends on the projection, interior finish and height above the floor.
From outside, the new roof, base and side angles become part of the architecture. The proportions should suit the wall and nearby openings instead of looking like an attachment chosen in isolation.
Bay window
Usually three sections with a broader centre and more pronounced side angles.
Bow window
Several narrower sections create a softer curve and repeated frame rhythm.
Ventilation
Selected flankers or sections may operate, but sash movement must remain physically compatible.
Project scope
Roofing, support, flashing and interior finishing are part of the assembly—not optional decoration.
Decide where ventilation belongs
Many bays use a fixed centre pane with compatible casement flankers. A bow may include selected operable sections among fixed units. The opening sashes must not conflict with one another, the roof or nearby paths.
More operable units add hardware, screens and frame divisions. If the primary goal is view and light, fewer carefully placed opening sections may be more useful.

Structure and water management set the scope
Projecting assemblies carry their weight beyond the wall. Support, head condition, roofing, flashing, insulation and interior finishing all require a coordinated plan.
Replacing an existing bay or bow is different from creating one in a flat wall. The rough opening and surrounding structure should be assessed before promising a particular projection or configuration.
