Start with the frame
Lay a removable screen on a flat surface and check whether the frame rocks, bows or has separated corners. New mesh pulled into a distorted frame may exaggerate the problem.
Look for cracked corners, damaged pull tabs and a worn spline channel. These conditions can make a mesh-only repair short-lived.
Mesh damage
Consider patching for one minor tear and re-screening for brittle or widespread damage.
Frame shape
A bowed or separated frame may need repair or replacement before new mesh.
Retention
Tabs, clips and spline keep the screen fitted safely in the opening.
Final fit
A repaired screen should install squarely and seal the perimeter without force.
Match the repair to the damage
A small isolated opening may accept a neat patch when appearance is not critical. Widespread brittleness, torn edges or several holes usually favour complete re-screening.
The replacement mesh and spline must suit the frame. Oversized spline or excessive tension can deform lightweight frames.
Confirm fit after the work
The completed screen should sit squarely without forcing, rattling or leaving insect gaps. Retention clips and tabs need to engage as intended.
