Crank problems need a closer look
A handle that spins may indicate a stripped operator or loose connection. Resistance can come from the operator, hinge track, sash alignment or debris.
Do not force the crank. Continued pressure can damage hardware or pull fasteners from the sash. Support the window safely and arrange assessment if it will not close.
Spinning crank
Often points to operator wear or a disconnected mechanism; avoid forcing it.
Hard movement
May involve hinges, tracks, alignment, debris or a failing operator.
Lock mismatch
Can indicate sash sag, frame distortion or worn locking components.
Draft or water
Requires checking seals, closure pressure, drainage and perimeter installation.
Locks reveal alignment and seal conditions
A lock that no longer reaches its keeper can reflect sash sag, frame movement or worn hardware. Simply moving the keeper may hide the alignment issue.
When locks engage correctly, they help compress weather seals. Missing or damaged weatherstripping can still create drafts even when the hardware appears to work.

Exposure affects the whole sash
Wind, rain and repeated sun can age exterior finishes, seals and hardware. Check the bottom corners, sill and hinge side for dirt, deterioration and signs of water.
Large sashes place more load on hinges and operators. Product age, replacement-part availability and overall frame condition determine whether repair remains sensible.

- Does the sash move when the crank turns?
- Do locks line up without force?
- Is the frame square and the sash supported?
- Are compatible replacement parts still available?
